My eyes fluttered open, back in my body, back in the hospital. I blinked a few times, something was off. Colors seemed duller, my hearing was faded.
...Sage...
I heard the chair beside me move and I turned my head to see Benlyam. He looked tired and was obviously just sleeping. I became alarmed the moment he stood up
to come near me.
"You're up!" he exclaimed, the remains of his tired state evident in his voice.
My hand went around my stomach as I kept my eyes on him. I couldn't afford to slack when Sage was weak, I didn't have defenses. Benylam watched my hand shield our baby away from him, his eyes swirled with pain.
"Violet..." he whispered as he walked closer to the bed. I got so unnerved, I shot up in the bed, a headache accompanying me, and wrapped my other hand around my bump as I screamed.
I tried to scream.
My voice cracked and my throat felt like it snapped, it was burning. I screamed because I had no other defense mechanisms without Sage, but that wasn't even working.
A storm was raging in his eyes at that. Pain, anger, regret, dread, and concern. He hated how I reacted to him, he knew why I did, and that agitated him even more.
"Shh, honey, don't do that!" He put up his hands to show me he wouldn't do anything to me and I narrowed my eyes at him. "Your vocal cords are strained or bruised. Reseda will explain it better," he walked over to the counter and grabbed a glass of water. "Here. Drink. You hurt yourself because you were too dehydrated..."
He went to hand me the glass but I didn't take it. I was mad at him, cautious. I didn't want to touch it. He sighed, frowning.
"Honey, drink the water. It's not going to hurt you," he pleaded and when I didn't grab it his eyes glanced down at my bump. "Don't do it for me," he looked back up at me, eyes softening, "please?"
I frowned. He was right, now wasn't the time to be selfish, I had someone to care for. I carefully held my hand out for the glass but he was hesitant to give it to me. Why? He literally just begged me to take it.
He eyed my hand as he came closer to give it. He didn't let go even when my hand wrapped around it. I furrowed my brows at him and he bit his lip as he let go, but hovered over my hand.
I realized why immediately. My hands were so weak, it immediately slipped, but he grabbed it quickly so it wouldn't break, and hurt me some more. My eyes landed on my wrist, it was heavily wrapped in bandages and my eyes traveled. His name was wrapped.
I became so self-conscious in the matter of a second. I backed away from him and dropped my hand, hugging my stomach. I took a small breath, a panic attack
nearing.
Where was he?
Benlyam eyed me.
"Violet," he coaxed, "it's okay. No one's gonna hurt you, honey. I promise. Just come here and drink, okay?" He was searching my face for any signs, I had no clue what he was looking for.
When I made no attempt to move, he came closer, and I panicked. He hushed me and held out the cup.
"Just drink, Violet..." Benlyam pleaded again. He looked pained that I was holding back.
...Violet, woman up! You have a baby!...
I inched closer and relief flashed in his eyes. He held the cup to my lips and his other hand hovered over the back of my head. I flinched away and he apologized.
"I won't hurt you, honey. I'm just being cautious..." He tipped the cup and made sure I had a good amount before he pulled away.
When Benlyam walked back over to put the glass down, the door opened. I winced and quickly looked over in fear. Reseda walked in. She smiled at me and respectfully nodded her head towards Benlyam.
"Good evening, Violet," she spoke softly. I blinked at her, I didn't feel like talking. "You've been asleep for a few hours, but we managed to clean you up! Your healing process might be slow due to everything, but we're doing our best to help you!" she smiled and flipped through papers on her clipboard. "You managed to get up to one-twenty three last time I saw you. You lost a lot of weight due to past events, but we'll get you back up! Congratulations, by the way," she smiled.
It took a second to realize she was talking about my baby and I gave a small smile at her.
"C-can-" I winced, it hurt to talk, "is e-everything o-okay?"
Did Selene set me up? It hurt to talk and that was one of her requirements...
"I'll be truthful with you, our biggest concern is your weight. It's not near the recommended weight and it's worrisome because we need you to produce estrogen."
I saw Benlyam stiffen and he bit his lip, crossing his arms.
"We'll get your weight up, everything should be fine. We'll make sure everything is okay, that's just the biggest problem. And proceeding that.." she read her clipboard, "your asthma problem might transfer to your pups, along with the slimness of your body, genetically. It could be an issue-"
Benlyam growled, cutting her off. I couldn't help but flinch at it. "Nothing's wrong with our pups!"
He was being harsher than usual, then again this was how he always acted. He was just warmer to me after some things.
She nodded. "Of course, Alpha. Pregnancy usually lasts about five and a half months. You're about two or three weeks along. Tomorrow, depending on how you feel, we can do an ultrasound for you to see."
"W-what's that?" My vocal cords pulled.
"Oh! In simple terms, it's a technique that uses sound waves, and it will produce an image of your fetus. A fetus is a baby. And it goes deeper than that medically and scientifically, but that's the simple version."
I felt so happy about those words. I instantly nodded.
"C-can we d-do it t-today?" It hurt so much to talk, but all I wanted to do was look. Make sure it was okay, see for myself because I've been blindly listening to
everyone.
"Um..." Reseda glanced at Benlyam for approval and he looked at me, then back at her, then focused on me.
"Violet, do you feel okay?" he asked me. I didn't look at him, just at Reseda, and nodded.
"P-please?" Reseda looked back at Benlyam and then nodded.
"Okay! I'll go get the Ob/Gyn! I'll be back shortly!" Reseda left the room and it was just Benlyam and me again.
It felt tense.
"Violet, listen, we can talk about it later, I don't want you hurting your voice, but I didn't hurt you, honey. You know I would never."
I didn't say anything back. I kept my eyes locked on my stomach as my hands rubbed small circles on the forming bump.
My baby. Ours...
I frowned. A tense silence fell again. Benlyam sat back down in his seat and then the door opened.
Reseda and a tall, dark-skinned woman with grey hair came in, wheeling some machine. She gave a big warm smile at me as she hooked up the machine to a wall. Once she did that, she turned to me.
"Nice to meet you, honey," her voice was deeper and it felt so nice to listen to. "I'm Eva, I'm just gonna ask you a few questions before we start, but you can lie down in the meantime." She turned back to her machine and started to do things.
"Have you used the restroom recently?" she asked looking back at me, I shook my head in denial. "Okay, and have you had plenty of water?"
"Yes, she's good," Reseda chimed in.
"Alright!" she turned back to me, "do you have underwear on?"
I felt my face get red at her question. I didn't know, I didn't check.
"Yes," Reseda answered for me.
"Alright, it's just for your modesty. It doesn't matter," Eva turned towards me with gel in her hand, "I'm going to lift up your gown, okay, honey? Do you mind if Alpha is in?"
I saw Benlyam snarl at her and she bowed her head. We both understood why, and he agreed with her, he just worried about me saying for him to leave, and he
wouldn't be able to see his kid.
I didn't care if he was here. Even if I was mad at him, it was still his kid just as much as it was mine. So, I shrugged my shoulders.
"Alright, I'm going to do your gown now, okay?"
Even though I nodded, the moment she neared my stomach I flinched and tried to swat her hand away. She pulled back and assured me she wouldn't hurt me, Benlyam cocked his head at the movement I did. It bothered him.
"S-sorry..." I whispered, my voice straining.
"Oh!" Reseda reached in her pocket and pulled out a small circle wrapped in yellow paper. She unwrapped it and put it at my mouth, "here, it's for your vocal cords. It's a honey and lemon drop. Try not to whisper or shout."
Eva lifted up my gown, right below my breasts.
"This is a water-based gel. It'll be chilly," she warned as she spread it on my belly. I flinched and Benlyam stood from his seat. He crossed his arms over his chest as he observed everything. He was making sure I was okay...
Eva pulled out a small wand, "This is a transducer, I'll be placing this on you, honey, okay?" I nodded and when she lightly put it on the gel, my hand twitched. It wanted to move everything away from my baby.
She started to move it as some static images appeared on the screen. Benlyam kept looking from my stomach to the screen, monitoring everything. Eva had me move a little bit, even hold my breath sometimes, then the screen showed an image.
"There you are! Triplets!"
My eyes watered as I stared at three circles on the screen. I opened my mouth, a smile automatically forming.
That's-
That's...
Triplets...
A happy, little laugh escaped my lips. Tears threatened to spill. Babies. My heart throbbed. I glanced over at Benlyam. He was staring at the screen in absolute adoration. His eyes glassy and he was biting his lip to contain a smile.
"You'll be able to learn the gender in about ten weeks," Eva informed.
One circle was smaller than the other two. I furrowed my brows.
"Why-" my voice cracked and I cleared my pained throat, "w-why is t-that one s-smaller?"
Eva glanced at the screen then back at me. "Don't worry about that- it's normal! I promise! It's just because of the placenta and placement in the womb!" she reassured and I looked back at the screen. Benlyam's smile dropped for a second but he picked it back up.
Oh my, I love them so much.
I can't wait to hold them.
Babies. Children...
"Can I have a sonogram of that?" Benlyam asked as he glanced down at me. I started to feel tired.
"Of course, Alpha! I could get a clearer picture, but we won't do a transvaginal ultrasound. You understand," Eva said and Benlyam nodded as he bit his lip.
Eva took away the transducer and wiped off the gel. She said her goodbyes and Reseda helped me out of the bed and took me into the bathroom to relieve myself and freshen up.
I was helped back into bed and she left, leaving a pack of the honey-lemon drops with Benlyam. I felt extremely tired as I laid down and Reseda left.
I looked over at Benlyam as he sat down and glared at him. I didn't want him with me. He looked at me and frowned, he blinked a few times, his eyes were still glossy,
and tilted his head.
"Violet, I didn't hurt you. Stop glaring at me," he mumbled sternly as he rubbed his temple.
"T-that's-" Benlyam cut me off by shushing me.
"Stop talking, honey. You're gonna hurt your vocal cords more," he grabbed one of the drops and unfolded it and neared me. I frowned at him as he tried to put it in my
mouth.
I moved my head. As tired as I was, I didn't want him trying to help me after what he did.
"Violet," he sternly yet softly spoke, "open your mouth. You're hurting yourself for no reason. Remember, we have things to care for," he glanced down at my hands that rested on my bump.
My heart loved that he said 'we', but my mind was angry. But he was right, again. I needed to be better at this, I need to be more vigilant with my babies. I opened my lips and he carefully put the drop in.
Wait.
Things?
I glared at him as my mouth parted in disgust. "Th-things?" I squeaked out and continued to suck on the drop.
He widened his eyes at me, getting slightly pissy.
"Honey, stop talking. Our children, yes," Benlyam pulled up, looking at my hands again.
"Th-they a-aren't things..." I muttered, but only got pain when my cords yanked. Benlyam quickly pressed his finger against my lips to silence me. He shut his eyes for a second before he opened them again.
I moved my head back but didn't really have anywhere to go.
"Stop. Talking," he whispered. I shot him a look and he pulled back his finger. He gazed back at my bump. "Am I allowed to touch our pups?" he asked lightly and I glared at him, trying to scoot away, but I didn't do much.
He nodded with a small frown that he was trying to cover up, his eyes showed his hurt. He sat down. "You should get some sleep."
He was going to stay? I shook my head.
...He would hurt me again...
Benlyam sighed out, pinching the bridge of his nose. "Violet, I didn't touch you," he whispered, "We'll talk about it when your vocal cords are better."
I frowned as my eyelids fluttered. I was tired and I wanted to sleep. I started to drift when I heard Benlyam get up. I opened my eyes and hazily looked at him.
"I'm just turning off the lights," he explained softly and I panicked. He felt it. I shook my head with wide eyes.
"N-no!" I gasped, my throat constricting.
"Okay! Okay, calm down, honey," he sat back down, leaving the lights on and I took a breath. I fell asleep.
I felt Chris's hands on me. He pulled out a knife and grinned at me.
"You left me, babykins. How dare you! He took something away from me, so I'll take something away from him!"
He slammed the knife down in my abdomen and I screamed.
I shot up in bed, grabbing my stomach. I tried to look around but it was pitch black in the room and without Sage, I couldn't see anything. I felt hands grab me and all I
could think of was Chris. Trauma blinded me.
I screamed and tried to push the muscular arms off of me. I was hysterically sobbing.
"G-get off!" I yelled my vocal cords scratching and cracking. The hands left me and I pushed myself away just as lights flickered on.
I whipped my head around the room and my eyes only found one figure. Benlyam neared me with his hands raised, concern flooding his features.
"Hey, Violet, you're okay," he whispered as he neared me.
...He hurt me. Danger. Protect your babies!...
I frantically scooted away from him and almost fell off of the bed, but he quickly grabbed me and pulled me to his chest, despite me pushing against him in fear.
"Shh, Violet, honey, you're okay. I'm here. I got you," he rubbed my back, trying to calm me down as he looked around the room for something. An inhaler. He didn't find
one.
He muttered a curse and focused on calming me down with the bond. He's done it before, like when I woke up from my coma. He'd let me get it out of my system but once it started leaning toward me hurting my mental state, he'd calm myself. Like when he kissed my wrists to stop them from hurting, healing me.
Crying strained my vocal cords. It burned. He pulled me against him as he sat on the bed. He ran a hand through my hair as I sniffled, coming down, thanks to him.
He dug into his pocket and pulled out a drop and put it by my mouth.
"Open," he whispered to me and I obeyed, completely exhausted to fight him. I sucked on the drop as he rubbed my back, "good," he mumbled. "Let me get you some
water."
He leaned over to the nightstand by the hospital bed and grabbed a glass of water, helping me drink it before placing it back down.
My hands went to my stomach and I looked down to make sure it was okay. I breathed out.
I looked up at Benlyam as he rocked me in his lap. I couldn't even speak, instead, I just mouthed, 'Where is he?'
He sighed. "Far. He's in the King's possession right now." He kissed my forehead lightly as he started to lie me down, pulling the blankets over me. I was slowly falling back asleep.
Benlyam lightly placed a hand on my bump and I flinched at first but then my body naturally sank into him. Though my cracked eyes, I saw hurt flash across his features then dread-filled disappointment. He pulled his hand back as my eyes fully closed.
He kissed my forehead and right when I fell under whispered, "I love you so much Violet, I'm so sorry."
But what I didn't understand was, why did he make that face when he touched me? Did he know about this unnamed medical condition that no one will speak of? Or was he just 'eh' about me having his kids?
